The Indian film industry has often been accused of being partial towards female actors simply because an actress rarely gets to play love interest of the lead actor after she gets married or becomes a mother but actors can romance with the girls of half of their age even when they cross 50.
It is also seen that in some movies, actresses have played roles of a mother to an actor who is older to them in real-life and today we will let you know about few such mother-son movie pairs.
1. Rohini Hattangadi – Amitabh Bachchan in Agneepath (1990)
Rohini Hattangadi, a talented actress who has worked in Hindi cinema as well as regional cinema and also on television, played the character of Amitabh Bachchan’s mother in “Agneepath” which also starred Mithun Chakraborty, Danny Denzongpa, etc. in important roles. At that time, Rohini was 35 yrs old while Big B was 48.
2. Sonali Kulkarni – Salman Khan in Bharat (2019)
“Bharat” is one of the most successful films of Salman Khan’s career and it also starred Katrina and Sunil Grover in important roles. The role of Salman’s mother was played by actress Sonali Kulkarni who was 44 yrs old at that time while Salman was 53 yrs old.
3. Supriya Karnik – Hrithik Roshan in Yaadein (2001):
Supriya Karnik has been a part of many hit movies and is a known name among audiences but you will be surprised to know that she was just 26 years old when she played the character of Hrithik Roshan’s mother in “Yaadein” and at that time Hrithik Roshan was 27. Well, Supriya’s husband in the movie was Anang Desai who was 48 yrs old during the making of the film which was directed by Subhash Ghai and also starred Kareena Kapoor Khan and Jackie Shroff.
4. Richa Chaddha – Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Gangs of Wasseypur (2012):
Richa Chaddha is one of the most talented actresses of the present time and it is no surprise that she played the character of Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s mother to the perfection in “Gangs of Wasseypur”. But do you know that at that time, the actress was just 24 while Nawaz was 38 yrs old. However after this movie, she ensured that she did not play mother to older actors and this is why she refused the role of Hrithik Roshan’s mother in “Agneepath” (2012).
5. Rakhee Gulzar – Amitabh Bachchan in Shakti (1982):
Senior actress Rakhee has played love interest of Amitabh Bachchan in many movies but in 1982 released “Shakti”, she portrayed Big B’s mother. In real-life, Rakhee is 5 yrs younger to Amitabh and while working for “Shakti”, Rakhee was 35 yrs old and Amitabh Bachchan was 40.
6. Sheeba Chaddha – Shah Rukh Khan in Zero (2018):
Shah Rukh Khan’s “Zero” in which he worked with Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif was a failure at the box-office but SRK was praised for trying something new. In the film, SRK played the character of a dwarf and role of his mother was played by Sheeba Chaddha. While SRK was 52 yrs old at that time, Sheeba was 46.
7. Mona Singh – Aamir Khan in Laal Singh Chaddha (2022)
Mona Singh who started her acting career with serial Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin played the character of Aamir Khan’s mother in the recently released “Laal Singh Chaddha”. Though the movie failed to impress audiences in cinema halls, whoever saw the movie praised Mona Singh for playing the role so beautifully. Nevertheless, there were many who slammed the makers for casting a 41 years old actress for the role of mother of a 57-yr actor.
8. Shefali Shah – Akshay Kumar in Waqt: The Race Against Time (2005)
Shefali Shah is undoubtedly one of the most talented actresses of the industry and she has played many roles in which she has given wonderful performances. Her performance in Amitabh Bachchan starrer “Waqt: The Race Against Time” was praised a lot by fans but later on in an interview, she revealed that she was a little upset playing the role of mother of an actor who is six years older to her. At that time, Shefali was 32 yrs old, while Akshay Kumar was 38 and how we can forget to mention that Amitabh who played the role of Shefali’s husband was 63 yrs old.
