Many filmmakers of the present times try to make their movies look bigger and grand by using VFX and special effects but one thing which some movies lack is the story because of which their high budget films fall flat at the box-office.

Time and again, it has been proved that content is the ultimate king and whether you make a big budget movie or a small budget film, the makers should give importance to the script of the movie.

Here is a list of some movies which were made in less than Rs. 10 crores and they went on to perform pretty well as far as their box-office earnings are concerned.

1. Bheja Fry (2007):

This is one of the best examples to prove that money can’t be a constraint if you really want to make a good movie. Sagar Ballary directed film which starred Vinay Pathak, Rajat Kapoor, Sarika Thakur, Milind Soman, Ranvir Shorey, etc. in important roles was made on the meager budget of just Rs. 60 lakhs but it went on to earn more than Rs. 18 crores. This was the first movie of the “Bheja Fry” series and it certainly made everyone believe that content is the king.

2. Paan Singh Tomar (2012):

This film was based on the life story of Indian athlete Paan Singh Tomar who won gold medals seven times continuously at the Indian National Games but he became a dacoit when police took no action after his mother was murdered. Directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, the film starred Irrfan Khan in the lead role and it was certainly one of the best acting performances of the late actor.

3. Kahaani (2012):

This Vidya Balan starrer and Sujoy Ghosh directed Hindu thriller movie was loved by the audiences so much that it earned Rs. 104 crores at the box-office. Nawazuddin Siddiqui also played a role in “Kahaani” which was mostly shot in Kolkata and was made a small budget of Rs. 8 crores. The movie also won many awards including three National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards.

4. Vicky Donor (2012):

Both Ayushmann Khurana and Yami Gautam made their Bollywood debut with this movie which was made on a small budget of Rs. 5 crores but went on to earn Rs. 67 crores. Annu Kapoor also played an important role in “Vicky Donor” which was directed by Shoojit Sircar.

5. No one Killed Jessica (2011):

“No one Killed Jessica” was based on the real incident of Jessica Lal murder case in which the culprits were initially released by the court because of lack of evidences. Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan played lead roles in the film which was directed by Rajkumar Gupta. It was made on a budget of Rs. 9 crores and earned Rs. 104 crores at the box-office.

6. Peepli Live (2010):

“Peepli Live” was a black comedy and it was a satirical take on the government and media in regard to their attitude towards farmers’ suicide. It was directed by Anusha Rizvi and starred Omkar Das Manikpuri, Naseeruddin Shah, Raghubir Yadav, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Shalini Vatsa and Malaika Shenoy in important roles. “Peepli Live” was made on the budget of Rs. 10 crores and it earned Rs. 47 crores at the box-office.

7. Lipstick Under My Burkha (2017):

“Lipstick Under My Burkha” was also a black comedy which was written and directed by Alankrita Shrivastava. It shows the secret lives of four women and their struggles for getting freedom in life. The movie starred Ratna Pathak, Konkona Sen Sharma, Aahana Kumra, Plabita Borthakur, etc. in important roles and was made on the small budget of Rs. 6 crores but it earned around Rs. 27 crores at the box-office.

8. A Wednesday (2008):

“A Wednesday” is certainly one of the best suspense-thrillers that have been made in Bollywood. Directed by Neeraj Pandey, this movie starred Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah in important roles. It was made on the budget of Rs. 5 crores but it earned Rs. 30 crores at the box-office and was also remade in Tamil and Telugu languages.

9. Phas Gaye Re Obama (2010):

Directed by Subhash Kumar, “Phas Gaye Re Obama” starred Rajat Kapoor, Neha Dhupia, Sanjay Mishra, Manu Rishi and Amole Gupte in important roles. This black comedy was made on the budget of Rs. 6 crores but managed to earn Rs. 14 crores.
