The Indian squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 was announced recently by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, while there were some comebacks in the team such as Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson and Yuzvendra Chahal, exclusion of Rinku Singh from the 15-member squad has raised many eyebrows.
Rinku Singh has been kept in reserves along with the skipper of Gujarat Titans, Shubman Gill, Avesh Khan and Khaleel Ahmed.
Rinku Singh has played 15 T20Is for the country in which he has scored 356 runs at a strike rate of 176.24 and his highest score was 69 runs.
Many former Indian cricketers such as Irfan Pathan, Kris Srikkanth, etc. were unhappy with exclusion of Rinku Singh and Srikkanth went on to the extent of saying that Rinku Singh should be in the team even if for this purpose, the selectors have to drop Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Rinku Singh’s father Khanchandra Singh also told mediapersons that they were confident of Rinku’s selection and they had even bought firecrackers. He further said that Rinku was heartbroken when he informed his mother about the selection news.
As per a source, the selectors had to drop Rinku because they were not able to accommodate him with Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube in the team.
The former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar feels that the selectors didn’t choose Rinku Singh because of his current performance in the IPL 2024. He added that Rinku hasn’t got much chance in this season to play big innings as top order of KKR is playing pretty well.
