Ajinkya Rahane, the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, didn’t mince words after his team fell to a stunning 16-run defeat against Punjab Kings—an outcome that also marked the lowest total ever defended in the IPL history. Chasing just 112, Kolkata appeared to have the game well within their grasp but ultimately succumbed to a spectacular collapse, bowled out for just 95 runs in the 16th over.
In the aftermath, Ajinkya Rahane acknowledged his personal errors as well as the collective failure of the batting line-up. He expressed disappointment with the team’s approach during the chase, particularly pointing out that he had played a poor shot and worsened the matter by not opting for a DRS review. The delivery that led to his dismissal, which struck him on the back leg during a sweep attempt, was later shown on replay to have pitched outside off stump — suggesting a potential let off had he reviewed it.
Ajinkya Rahane reflected candidly on the performance, admitting there was little to defend about the batting effort. He emphasised that while the bowlers, led by a sharp performance from Harshit Rana, did an excellent job restricting Punjab to a low total, it was the batters who let the team down. He added that as a unit, they had failed to take responsibility in a chase that should have been straightforward, and the results were there for all to see.
He also acknowledged the need for calm introspection after such a loss and stressed the importance of staying positive, especially with a significant portion of the tournament still ahead. With the next match scheduled against Gujarat Titans at home, Rahane pointed out that the team must regroup quickly and shift their focus forward.
The loss was orchestrated in large part by Punjab’s Yuzvendra Chahal, who delivered a brilliant spell of 4 for 28. His scalps included Ajinkya Rahane himself, along with key players like Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh. The latter two fell on consecutive deliveries in the twelfth over, effectively breaking the back of Kolkata’s chase and ensuring Punjab’s name in the record books.
From what seemed like a comfortable run chase to one of the most inexplicable collapses in the IPL, Kolkata’s defeat became an instant talking point — and Ajinkya Rahane’s honest reaction only highlighted how much the team will need to recover before facing the challenges ahead.
