The India-Pakistan relationship has been one of the most enduring and emotionally charged subjects in Bollywood cinema. From stories of separation and suffering during Partition to tales of espionage, brotherhood and national pride, Hindi films have explored the turbulent bond between the two nations across genres and decades.

This recurring theme not only mirrors the socio-political atmosphere of the times but also attempts to humanize the complex relationship shared by the people on both sides of the border.

One of the earliest and most poignant films dealing with the aftermath of Partition is Garm Hava directed by M.S. Sathyu. Set in post-1947 Agra, the film follows a Muslim family grappling with the decision to either stay in India or move to the newly created Pakistan. The film’s emotional depth, understated politics and emphasis on communal harmony made it a classic, often cited as one of Indian cinema’s most humane portrayals of the Partition experience.

2. Subarnarekha (1965):

Another early film to tackle the theme was Subarnarekha (1965) by Ritwik Ghatak, a Bengali-language film that poignantly captures the trauma and dislocation brought on by Partition. Though not directly about India and Pakistan as nation-states, the film reflects the tragedy that befell families who were caught in the crossfire of shifting borders and identity crises.

3. 1947: Earth (1998)

This movie by Deepa Mehta is another powerful narrative that dives deep into the horrors of Partition. Starring Aamir Khan and Nandita Das, the film is told through the eyes of a young girl and showcases how violence, betrayal and communal tensions tear apart relationships in the wake of political decisions. It remains one of the most emotionally harrowing portrayals of India-Pakistan division.

4. Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001)

Shifting from personal drama to patriotic action, the early 2000s brought a wave of India vs Pakistan films centered on national security and heroism. Gadar: Ek Prem Katha starring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel became a massive box office hit. The film tells the story of a Sikh man who falls in love with a Muslim woman during the Partition. Gadar’s over-the-top nationalism struck a chord with audiences and established a popular template for Indo-Pak narratives in mainstream cinema.

5. Gadar 2 (2023):

Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’s long-awaited sequel, Gadar 2 revived the tale with the next generation, bringing back the original’s emotional fervor and action-packed drama. While critics debated its treatment of Indo-Pak relations, its commercial success underlined the theme’s enduring appeal.

Spy thrillers have also proven to be a successful vehicle for India-Pakistan tensions. Ek Tha Tiger starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif revolved around an Indian RAW agent who falls in love with a Pakistani ISI agent. The film cleverly mixed action, romance and diplomacy, portraying both sides with a certain level of balance. Its sequels Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) and Tiger 3 (2023) continued this cross-border narrative with a more global espionage backdrop.

7. Raazi (2018):

Directed by Meghna Gulzar and starring Alia Bhatt, Raazi was a subtler take on espionage, focusing on a young Indian woman who marries into a Pakistani military family to spy for India during the 1971 war. Based on a true story, Raazi was lauded for its balanced portrayal of both countries, avoiding typical negative portrayal of villain and emphasizing on human emotions rather than sensationalism.

In more recent years, Bollywood has attempted to blend spectacle with national sentiment. Pathaan starring Shah Rukh Khan is a high-octane action film involving espionage, terr@r threats and a Pakistani character played by Deepika Padukone who allies with the Indian protagonist. While not directly an India vs Pakistan film, it operates within the familiar terrain of cross-border threats and uneasy alliances.

9. Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015):

Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015)  is perhaps the most emotionally resonant of all. The film tells the story of an Indian man helping a mute Pakistani girl reunite with her family across the border. Its heartwarming plot, focus on shared humanity and critique of hostility between the two countries won both box office success and critical acclaim. It stands out as a rare film that calls for love and compassion between India and Pakistan rather than conflict.

Over the decades, Bollywood’s treatment of India-Pakistan themes has evolved from nationalistic fervor to more balanced and emotional storytelling. While some films continue to feed into patriotic sentiment, others strive to highlight the shared culture, pain and hope that bind the two nations. Through song, emotion and spectacle, Hindi cinema continues to reflect the pulse of public sentiment on one of the subcontinent’s most complex relationships.
