Shubman Gill’s debut as India’s Test captain ended on a disappointing note as the team fell to England by five wickets in the opening match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Headingley.
Despite several promising moments and a personal century to mark the occasion, Shubman Gill was left lamenting a series of missed opportunities, both with the bat and in the field, that tilted the contest in England’s favour.
India’s defeat was not due to one isolated factor but rather a combination of critical errors. Chief among them was the fielding, which saw numerous dropped catches and wasted breakthroughs. These lapses added pressure on a bowling unit that was already stretched because of overreliance on Jasprit Bumrah whose outstanding spells were not enough to compensate for the lack of support from the rest of the attack.
The bowling figures told the story: The Indian bowlers conceded a total of 98 boundaries and eight sixes across the innings, 44 boundaries and three sixes in the second alone.
Speaking after the match, Shubman Gill acknowledged the high quality of the contest, saying that while it was a brilliant game of Test cricket, India’s failure to seize crucial moments, particularly in the field and lower-order batting, ultimately made the difference. Reflecting on the second innings, he admitted the team had initially been looking to push their total closer to 430 and then declare but a collapse saw the final six wickets yield just around 20 to 25 runs, falling well short of the target.
Even on the final day, Shubman Gill believed India had a chance after a strong opening stand from England. However, as the ball aged and fielding lapses continued, the momentum slipped away. While India managed to claim some key wickets in the second session, including Ben Stokes’ dismissal via a smart catch from Shubman Gill off Jadeja’s bowling, the damage had already been done.
The Indian skipper acknowledged that the first-innings collapse had been a topic of internal discussion and something the team intends to address in the upcoming matches. He stressed the need for improvement in converting chances, particularly on flat wickets where opportunities are few and far between. Describing his side as a young team still growing into its potential, Shubman Gill expressed hope that those learning moments would translate into better execution in the matches to come.
When asked about tactical decisions and what might have been done differently, Shubman Gill said that India had started well with the ball, keeping things tight early on. However, once the ball got older, it became increasingly difficult to contain England’s batters. Edges that didn’t carry and chances that went astray added to India’s misfortunes. He credited England for capitalising effectively, particularly through a commanding opening stand that took control away from the visitors.
While some observers noted moments when the more experienced KL Rahul appeared to be guiding field placements and strategies, raising questions about the dynamic in the leadership group, Shubman Gill remained composed in assessing the loss. He defended Ravindra Jadeja’s efforts, noting that the left-arm spinner had created several chances, including a couple of them which Rishabh Pant couldn’t hold onto, and emphasised that such occurrences are part of the game.
Though the outcome was not what Gill or India had hoped for, the young captain showed perspective, recognising both the positives and the shortcomings. With the second Test set to begin in Birmingham on July 2, Gill and his team will look to rebound from the lessons learned in Leeds.
