India’s journey into a new chapter of Test cricket, one without veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, got off to a troubling start as the team succumbed to a five-wicket defeat against England in the opening Test at Headingley. The result handed England a 1-0 advantage in the five-match series and exposed several cracks in a team undergoing transition.

Led by Shubman Gill, India failed to defend a target of 371, a total that should have posed a considerable challenge but a lackluster bowling performance, save for Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliance, and an alarming number of dropped catches turned the contest in the hosts’ favour.

This defeat is likely to sting for some time, especially considering the moments India had the upper hand, only to waste them repeatedly.

One of the most glaring setbacks was India’s inability to consolidate strong batting positions. In the first innings, the team collapsed from a commanding 430 for 3 to 471 all out, losing their final seven wickets for just 41 runs. The pattern repeated itself in the second innings, where another collapse saw them fall from 333 for 3 to 364 all out, setting England a target that, in the end, proved far too manageable.

India’s fears about a one-dimensional bowling attack came true. Bumrah fought a lone battle with the ball, picking up a five-wicket haul in the first innings despite minimal support from the rest of the attack and some uninspiring fielding. His efforts eked out a narrow six-run lead but with fielders letting him down, eight catches were dropped in total, with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal responsible for four of them, momentum was constantly handed back to England.

The broader context of this loss has added to the scrutiny. This was India’s first Test match since the retirement of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and their absence loomed large. As social media lit up with criticism of India’s disjointed performance, many fans even questioned whether return for the retired duo might be necessary. The call for experience and stability in leadership and execution grew louder with each missed opportunity on the field.

The pressure has also begun to mount on the new head coach Gautam Gambhir who has now overseen seven defeats in eleven Tests. With India staring down the possibility of another series loss, the team’s management will be under intense pressure to find answers and make swift adjustments.

The second Test will be played at Edgbaston starting July 2, offering India a narrow window to regroup, address their glaring weaknesses and attempt to even the series before the narrative spirals further out of control.
