Rohit Sharma has finally addressed the retirement speculation surrounding him, calling them rumours for the first time publicly. Speculation about the Indian cricketer’s future began before India’s tour of England but he continued to play despite the growing talk about his retirement.

Rohit spoke about the issue on the television show which he hosts, i.e., Family Full House with Rohit Sharma. During the show, he was joined by actress Karisma Kapoor and actor Chunky Pandey. The three were answering a fan’s question about the most famous rumours they had heard about themselves.

While Karisma spoke about rumours related to her diet and Chunky addressed claims that he was miser, Rohit used the opportunity to talk about the speculation surrounding his cricketing future. He said that retirement rumours about him had been circulating for a long time and were still being discussed. He also expressed hope that the rumours surrounding all three celebrities would finally be put to rest.

Reports had earlier suggested that Ajit Agarkar, who was the chief selector at the time, wanted to move on from Rohit Sharma ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup and bring in Yashasvi Jaiswal instead. According to these reports, Agarkar had asked Pragyan Ojha, the South Zone selector and a close friend of Rohit, to communicate the message to the Indian batter.

Rohit Sharma was reportedly unhappy with the development and approached some BCCI officials to express his disagreement. At the time, there was also speculation that he might announce his retirement after the final ODI of the series at Lord’s.

The situation reminded many of what happened in May 2025, when Ajit Agarkar reportedly informed Rohit that he was no longer part of India’s plans for Test cricket. Soon after those reports emerged, Rohit announced his retirement from the Test format on social media.

However, Rohit Sharma’s future in ODI cricket received a boost when BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia publicly stated that the cricketer would not retire after the Lord’s ODI. Rohit strengthened his position further by scoring a century in the match. Devajit Saikia’s public statement, however, reportedly played a role in Ajit Agarkar’s decision not to accept an extension to his contract, bringing his tenure as India’s chief selector to an end.
