The Indian Premier League (IPL) is more than just a cricket tournament; it’s a cultural spectacle that grips the nation every season. Known for its high-octane matches, celebrity presence and massive viewership, the IPL draws millions of fans to stadiums and screens alike. However, the upcoming seasons might feel a bit heavier on fans’ pockets due to a recent shift in tax policies.
In a move that may disappoint cricket enthusiasts, ticket prices for the IPL will now be subject to a 40% Goods and Services Tax (GST), replacing the previous 28% rate. This change means an overall increase in ticket costs, with a ticket originally priced at Rs 1000 now costing Rs 1400, up from the earlier Rs 1280. This adjustment places IPL tickets in the highest GST slab, along with sectors like casinos and race clubs.
On the other hand, there is some good news for fans of international cricket. Tickets for international matches will now be taxed at a reduced rate of 18%, down from the earlier 28%. For instance, a base ticket of Rs 1000 for an international game will now cost Rs 1180 instead of Rs 1280. This reduction makes international matches more budget-friendly and may boost attendance.
The Press Information Bureau recently clarified that the GST hike applies specifically to sporting events like the IPL” while tickets for other recognised sports events priced above Rs 500 will attract the lower 18% GST. Tickets priced under Rs 500 remain exempt from any GST. This change also opens the door for more affordable access to state-run leagues and domestic matches.
The revised GST rates will be implemented from September 22, just ahead of the Women’s World Cup, which will be the next international tournament held in India. While ticket sales for the World Cup haven’t started yet, this tax cut could encourage more fans to attend.
These changes came as part of a broader announcement by the GST Council, which also reduced taxes on a variety of everyday items, from food products to personal care items and insurance services. For cricket fans, however, the mixed impact of these changes means choosing between the IPL’s glitz at a higher cost or enjoying international matches at a slightly lower price.
