As Indian cricket transitions into a new era under Shubman Gill’s leadership, former all-rounder Irfan Pathan has shared some thoughtful advice for veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. He suggested that if the two legends wish to feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup, they should consider returning to domestic cricket to get the match practice they now lack.
Irfan Pathan’s remarks came soon after chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed that both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were yet to confirm their availability for the 2027 tournament. Ajit Agarkar also announced that Shubman Gill would replace Rohit as India’s ODI captain, marking the beginning of a new phase in Indian cricket.
Over the past year, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have gradually stepped away from international formats, retiring from T20Is after the 2024 World Cup and giving up Test cricket earlier this year. With the number of ODI matches decreasing due to commercial reasons and the IPL being a T20 tournament, both the players now have limited opportunities to stay match-fit.
Irfan Pathan explained that while fitness has always been a priority for both the cricketers, there is a difference between maintaining physical fitness and having match readiness. He pointed out that consistent game time helps players stay mentally and physically in rhythm, which can only come from regular competition. For that reason, he suggested that the pair should take part in domestic tournaments such as the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which could help them prepare for future challenges.
He added that even though Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are big players, possess immense experience and know how to handle pressure, long gaps between international games could make it harder to maintain their top form. Participating in domestic matches, according to Irfan Pathan, would help them remain sharp and ready if they aim for another World Cup appearance.
Irfan Pathan also spoke about Shubman Gill stepping into a major leadership role, calling it both an opportunity and a challenge. As Shubman Gill takes charge of the ODI and Test teams, Irfan Pathan said that it would be crucial for him to continue his good batting form while also carrying forward the legacies of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
With a new generation leading and two greats possibly eyeing one last World Cup, Indian cricket seems poised for an intriguing journey ahead.
