Social media trolling over faith has now brought two big Indian stars together again. India fast bowler Mohammed Shami has strongly supported Virat Kohli after the former captain was criticised online for his spiritual visits with his wife Anushka Sharma. Shami said there is no reason for anyone to have a problem if the couple wants to follow their faith. He also defended Anushka against people who claim that she has made Virat Kohli more spiritual, saying that even if it were true, it is no one else’s business.
For context, Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma often visit the famous spiritual leader Premanand Maharaj Ji in Vrindavan. Their most recent visit happened last month after India’s ODI series against England. The couple is also often seen visiting different temples across India with their two children, Vamika and Akaay, to seek blessings and life advice.
In an interview with a leading newspaper, Shami said this spiritual side of Virat Kohli is not new at all. He explained that Kohli has always been a very passionate person who is very particular about his beliefs and always makes proper time for them in a systematic way.
Shami also shared that Virat is an extremely organised person in general and even his hotel rooms are kept very perfectly, which shows how particular he is about his life.
Talking about Premanand Maharaj Ji, Shami said no one should point fingers or object to someone’s belief. He said if a person believes in something, he has every right to give it priority.
He added that if they are a couple and even if Anushka is the reason behind it, why anyone else should have a problem with it. He further said he just doesn’t understand this trolling.
This support is special because in 2021, it was Virat Kohli who had stood up for Shami. Back then, Shami was targeted on social media for his religion after a bad match against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup and Kohli had defended him strongly.
Meanwhile, Kohli was in good form last month. Even though India lost the ODI series against England 1-2, he scored 144 runs in 3 matches at an average of 48.00 and a strike rate of 109.09, with two half-centuries. He is now expected to be back in action for India’s three-match ODI series against the West Indies, which is scheduled from September 27 to October 3.
