Virat Kohli continues to prove why he is regarded as one of the greatest ODI batters of all time. The Indian superstar has added another major milestone to his remarkable career by surpassing Sachin Tendulkar to become the highest run-scorer in ODI run chases.
The historic achievement came during the first ODI between India and New Zealand at Eden Park in Auckland on Wednesday (November 4). Virat Kohli needed 54 runs to go past Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 8,720 runs in the second innings of ODIs.

The Delhi-born right-handed batter achieved the milestone on the 39th ball of his innings. He was batting on 51 off 38 deliveries before hitting a boundary to take his individual score to 55 and move past Sachin Tendulkar’s tally.
Virat Kohli, who has turned 38 on Thursday (November 5), now has 8,722* runs in 169 innings across 176 ODIs. He is also the second-highest run-scorer in the history of ODI cricket.

Virat Kohli now leads the list of batters with the most runs while chasing targets in ODI cricket. Sachin Tendulkar occupies the second position, while India’s Rohit Sharma is third. Rohit has scored his 6,801 runs in 163 innings across 167 matches.

Virat Kohli Completes 50 Fifty-Plus Scores in Away ODIs
Virat Kohli achieved another significant milestone before breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record. He completed 50 scores of 50 or more runs in away ODIs during the same match against New Zealand. Playing his 128th away ODI for India, Kohli reached his half-century in just 35 balls while chasing a DLS-revised target of 143 runs. His record in away ODIs now includes 21 centuries and 29 half-centuries, taking his total of 50-plus scores to 50.
Ricky Ponting’s Record Also Within Reach
Virat Kohli also had an opportunity to break another major ODI record during the first match against New Zealand. He was within reach of surpassing former Australian captain Ricky Ponting as the highest run-scorer in ODI matches against New Zealand. Ponting scored 1,971 runs in 51 ODIs against the Black Caps between 1995 and 2011.

Virat Kohli, meanwhile, had accumulated 1,852 runs in 37 ODIs against New Zealand before the ongoing match. He needed another 120 runs to surpass Ricky Ponting’s record.
With multiple records already to his name, Virat Kohli continues to strengthen his reputation as one of the finest batters in ODI history, particularly when it comes to chasing targets.
