A player does not always need to score runs to make a match-winning contribution. Rohit Sharma proved exactly that during the rain-affected first ODI between India and New Zealand in Auckland on Wednesday. Although the Indian opener was dismissed for a six-ball duck, his outstanding fielding effort became one of the biggest talking points of the match.
India eventually secured a comfortable five-wicket victory, thanks to a brilliant batting performance from Virat Kohli, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. Chasing an initial target of 186 runs, India’s revised target was reduced to 167 runs in 40 overs and later to 143 runs in 32 overs because of repeated rain interruptions. Virat Kohli led India’s chase with an impressive 74 off just 51 balls, helping the visitors reach the revised target in 22.4 overs.

After the match, Indian captain Shubman Gill praised the team’s collective bowling and fielding performance. However, he specifically highlighted Rohit Sharma’s athletic run-out of Daryl Mitchell as the moment that shifted the momentum in India’s favour.
Here is how Rohit Sharma carried out the run-out:

Shubman Gill explained that New Zealand’s partnership between Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips was particularly dangerous, considering how well the two batters had performed against India previously. He felt Rohit Sharma’s brilliant run-out played a crucial role in breaking that partnership and changing the direction of the contest.

Anshul Kamboj and Gurnoor Brar Impress With the Ball
Shubman Gill also appreciated young Indian fast bowlers Anshul Kamboj and Gurnoor Brar for their impressive performances. Both bowlers used their pace and the conditions at Eden Park effectively, making scoring difficult for New Zealand’s batters.
Anshul Kamboj: 2 wickets for 22 runs in 10 overs
Gurnoor Brar: 3 wickets for 44 runs in 9.2 overs
Shubman Gill felt Anshul Kamboj was particularly suited to conditions like those in Auckland because of his ability to generate seam movement and remain effective even with the older ball. He also highlighted Gurnoor Brar’s ability to extract extra bounce and use his pace when the pitch was not offering much assistance to the bowlers. Shubman Gill described the performances of both fast bowlers as excellent and admired their contribution to India’s overall bowling effort.
Shubman Gill Explains Why Rain Interruptions Made the Chase Difficult

While India eventually completed the chase comfortably, Shubman Gill admitted that the repeated rain interruptions made things challenging for the batting side. India had initially started chasing 186 runs, but two separate rain interruptions resulted in changes to the target under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method.
After Rohit Sharma’s early dismissal, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli steadied the innings with an important second-wicket partnership. Kohli scored 74 runs, while Shubman Gill contributed 37 runs. Their 114-run partnership put India firmly in control of the match.
Shubman Gill explained that batting became more challenging after the rain because the pitch became quicker and offered greater assistance to the seam bowlers. He also pointed out that it is never easy for batters who have settled at the crease to adjust when rain interrupts the game and conditions change. However, Virat Kohli’s attacking approach made the chase much easier for India, allowing the team to maintain control despite the changing conditions.

India Take 1-0 Lead, Second ODI in Wellington
With this five-wicket victory, India have taken a 1-0 lead in the ODI series against New Zealand. The team’s combined bowling effort, impressive fielding and Virat Kohli’s match-winning innings ensured a successful start to the series.
The second ODI between India and New Zealand will be played in Wellington on Saturday, where the visitors will look to extend their lead and seal another victory.
