It was a night that Indian cricket will never forget. Under the lights of a packed DY Patil Stadium, the Indian women’s team created history by lifting their first ever World Cup title, a moment that legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar described as one of the greatest in cricketing journey of the country.
In a final that began late due to rain, India put up an impressive total of 298 for seven, powered by Shafali Verma’s solid 87 and Deepti Sharma’s quickfire 58. South Africa, led by captain Laura Wolvaardt’s fighting century, gave a spirited chase but were bowled out for 246. Deepti’s five-wicket haul sealed India’s triumph, sending the crowd into wild celebration.
Calling it a defining moment for Indian cricket, Sunil Gavaskar said that watching Harmanpreet Kaur take the final catch to secure victory was an unforgettable sight. He described the atmosphere at the stadium as electric, filled with emotion and pride as the team achieved what previous generations had only dreamed of.
The win was even more special because of the hurdles the team had faced earlier in the tournament. India’s campaign had wavered during the league stage with three consecutive defeats but the side fought back strongly in the knockouts to script a fairytale finish. The victory came months after India’s U19 women’s team had successfully defended their T20 World Cup title, signaling a bright new era for women’s cricket in the country.
Sunil Gavaskar praised the team’s resilience and leadership, commending Harmanpreet Kaur for her determination and composure under pressure. He said that this triumph would inspire countless young girls to take up the sport and dream big.
Calling it a proud moment for both men’s and women’s cricket in India, Sunil Gavaskar congratulated the entire team for bringing immense joy to the nation. He said that the victory wasn’t just about winning a trophy, it was about rewriting history and proving that Indian women’s cricket had arrived on the world stage with unmatched grace and grit.
Congratulations Indian women’s cricket team!
