A quiet shift is taking place in Indian cricket, and although fans continue to hope for familiar heroes to walk out in whites again, the signs point in another direction. Ravichandran Ashwin, speaking candidly on his YouTube show, reflected on this changing landscape and gently reminded supporters that the careers of icons like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are no longer in their early chapters. He explained that time moves quickly, often faster than fans are willing to accept, and urged people to simply enjoy whatever remains of their journeys rather than dream of reversals or rewinds.

His comments arrived at a moment when speculation had begun spiraling. Several media reports hinted that the BCCI might try to convince Virat Kohli and even another recently retired star to reconsider their Test retirement. The rumours grew louder after India’s 2-0 home series loss to South Africa, a result that head coach Gautam Gambhir attributed to a transition phase dominated by inexperienced players. With Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin stepping away from the format in the past year and with earlier stalwarts like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane already out of the picture, India suddenly finds itself fielding one of its most inexperienced Test batting groups in recent memory.

However, the BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia firmly shut the door on claims that the board was attempting to negotiate comebacks. Speaking to a news channel, he made it clear that nothing of that sort had happened and warned fans against believing unsubstantiated chatter. His clarification echoed Ashwin’s own sentiment that constantly revisiting what might have been, distracts from appreciating what is still in front of us.
Ashwin also spoke specifically about Virat Kohli’s retirement decision, especially in light of the batter’s fluent performance in the first ODI in Ranchi. He acknowledged that while fans may feel tempted to connect that innings to a possible Test return, elite players do not make such decisions impulsively. According to him, Virat Kohli would have thought deeply about stepping away from the longest format and reopening that chapter repeatedly is neither helpful nor fair. He reminded viewers that Test cricket is a completely different challenge and Kohli has chosen his path with clarity.

As India navigates a fresh era with new faces learning on the job, Ashwin believes the healthiest approach is to move forward rather than look back. For now, he urges fans to celebrate the present, recognising that even legends cannot play forever, and that the best way to honour them is to enjoy every remaining moment they offer on the field.
We certainly agree with Ravichandran Ashwin, what about you?
