Arshad Warsi has spent years making audiences laugh with his effortless comic timing and memorable performances. From iconic roles in Munna Bhai MBBS to popular entertainers like Golmaal and Jolly LLB, comedy has remained one of his strongest suits. But not every funny film has brought happy memories for the actor. In fact, one well-known movie stands out as an experience he wishes had gone differently.
In a candid interview, Arshad Warsi spoke about his time working on Priyadarshan’s 2004 comedy Hulchul and admitted that the project turned into a disappointing chapter in his career. He shared that he usually avoids speaking negatively about his films but this particular experience left him feeling misled and uncomfortable.
Arshad Warsi explained that he was approached for the film by writer Neeraj Vohra during a phase when he was already busy juggling several projects. When he was told the film would be directed by Priyadarshan, a filmmaker he greatly respected, he agreed almost immediately. His confidence grew further when he was informed that his role would be similar in importance and impact to a key comic character (Akshay Kumar) from Hera Pheri, which made him believe it would be a strong, well-written part.
However, once filming began, reality did not match expectations. Arshad Warsi gradually realised that there was a big difference between being written as an equal companion to the lead characters and simply being shown as their friend on screen. When he arrived on set, the nature of his role came as a shock. He made it clear that he did not blame the director, believing that Priyadarshan may not have been fully aware of how the part had been shaped.
What added to his confusion was the styling. Arshad Warsi recalled being given a costume that made little sense to him, leaving him unsure whether it was even appropriate clothing for the character. The lack of clarity and preparation made him feel that the overall setup was poorly thought out. Eventually, things reached a point where he began wearing his own clothes for a large portion of the film.

Despite his disappointment, Arshad Warsi honoured his commitment and completed the project. Hulchul, which also starred Akshaye Khanna, Kareena Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Suniel Shetty and Arbaaz Khan, went on to become a popular film with audiences.
While the movie gained cult status over time, for Arshad Warsi, it remains a reminder that even successful films can come with behind-the-scenes experiences an actor would want to forget.
