“Nothing Changes,” Suryakumar Yadav Breaks Silence After India’s Crushing 76-Run Defeat

It was a night that shattered momentum and records alike. After 823 days without a defeat in the T20 World Cup, team India’s winning streak came crashing down with a heavy 76-run loss to South Africa in the Super 8 stage on Sunday. Chasing 188 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Suryakumar Yadav and his men were bowled out for just 111 in 18.5 overs.

Shivam Dube tried to fight back with a 37-ball 42 but the effort wasn’t enough to stop the slide.

The defeat turned historic for all the wrong reasons. It became India’s heaviest loss by runs in the T20 World Cup history, surpassing the previous 49-run defeat against Australia in the 2010 edition in the West Indies. It also stands as India’s second biggest defeat by runs in all T20 internationals, behind the 80-run loss to New Zealand in Wellington in 2019.

Being bowled out for 111 marked India’s third-lowest total in the T20 World Cups. Their lowest remains 79 all out against New Zealand in Nagpur while chasing 127.

Although India had won all the four group-stage matches, cracks were visible. Against a disciplined South African attack, the top order collapsed quickly. Ishan Kishan departed early, Tilak Varma’s struggles continued and Abhishek Sharma failed to find rhythm. Even Suryakumar Yadav couldn’t adjust to the conditions, while the middle order only delayed the inevitable.

South Africa’s bowlers executed their plans perfectly. Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj and Corbin Bosch made full use of the grip and uneven bounce on offer.

Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah had delivered a superb spell of 3 for 15 to limit South Africa to 187/7 but his effort went in vain.

India’s first T20 World Cup loss since 2022 has now thrown the group wide open, turning the remaining Super 8 games into must-win battles.
