Big moments create legends and Sunday night was one of those moments. One unforgettable final, one record broken and one fast bowler who rose to the biggest occasion….
India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah lit up the grand finale of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 with a spell fans will not forget anytime soon. Playing against New Zealand in Ahmedabad on March 8, Bumrah bowled four tight overs, gave away just 15 runs and grabbed four crucial wickets.
His fiery performance came after India’s batters piled up a massive 255 for 5 in 20 overs, setting the stage for a dominant finish. Jasprit Bumrah’s match-winning effort earned him the Player of the Match award but that was not the only prize he claimed.
With those four wickets, Bumrah went past the long-standing record held by Lasith Malinga for the most T20 World Cup wickets by a fast bowler.
Lasith Malinga, who famously captained Sri Lanka to the title in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2014, played 31 matches in the tournament and took 38 wickets. Jasprit Bumrah has now surged ahead with 40 wickets in just 26 matches, reaching the milestone faster and in fewer games.
Among fast bowlers with the most wickets in the T20 World Cup history, Jasprit Bumrah now sits at the top. He is followed by Anrich Nortje (38 wickets) of South Africa, Tim Southee (36 wickets) and fellow Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh (36 wickets).
The overall tournament record, however, still belongs to Shakib Al Hasan from Bangladesh. The legendary spin-bowling all-rounder ended his T20 World Cup journey with 50 wickets in 43 matches. Only four bowlers in total have taken more wickets than Jasprit Bumrah in the tournament’s history. The other three bowlers are – Adam Zampa (44 wickets), Adil Rashid (44 wickets) and Rashid Khan (43 wickets).

Jasprit Bumrah was in top form throughout the 2026 edition. He played eight matches and picked up 14 wickets, finishing as the joint-highest wicket-taker of the tournament. India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy matched that tally with 14 wickets of his own.
