Sometimes, even the strongest bonds in sports come to an end, not due to conflict but because it simply feels like the right time to move on. That’s exactly what happened with Sanju Samson, one of the most consistent faces of the IPL over the past decade.

The 31 years old wicketkeeper-batter from Kerala is set to wear a new jersey in the IPL 2026. Sanju Samson will now represent Chennai Super Kings after making a surprising switch from Rajasthan Royals. The move, completed in November 2025 ahead of the IPL auction, caught many fans off guard, especially given his long association with the Jaipur-based team.

For years, Sanju Samson wasn’t just a player for Rajasthan Royals, he was a core part of their identity. He played 11 seasons for the franchise across two stints (2013–2015 and 2018–2025), making him their most capped player and highest run-scorer. Between those years, he also spent time with Delhi Capitals (then known as Delhi Daredevils) during the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

So why did Sanju Samson leave?

Sanju Samson recently explained that the decision was personal and came from a place of clarity. After spending so many years with Rajasthan Royals, he felt his journey with the team had reached its natural conclusion. Rather than holding on, he chose to move forward and explore a new chapter in his career.

Now, that new chapter begins with Chennai Super Kings, one of the most successful teams in the IPL history. Interestingly, Sanju Samson’s debut match for CSK in the IPL 2026 will be against his former team Rajasthan Royals at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.

While such a match could be emotional for any player, Sanju Samson is keeping things simple. He has made it clear that once he steps onto the field, his focus will be purely on the game. Emotions, he believes, take a backseat during play.

Off the field, however, the respect remains. Sanju Samson still shares strong bonds with many players, staff members and management from Rajasthan Royals, people he grew up playing with. But he also understands that every player’s journey evolves over time.

For him, this move isn’t about leaving something behind, it’s about stepping into something new. With excitement and a positive mindset, Sanju Samson is ready to embrace this fresh start, even if it means facing his old team along the way.

Well, change is the only constant thing in this world, isn’t it?
