The IPL is no longer just a cricket tournament, it has become a financial powerhouse. Mumbai Indians (MI) have emerged as the world’s most valuable IPL franchise, with an estimated valuation of $2.1 billion (₹20,008.8 crore), according to a report by leading American publication. The report also highlights the growing financial strength of the league, with every IPL franchise now valued at more than $1.5 billion (₹14,292 crore).

Mumbai Indians’ valuation puts them slightly ahead of well-known North American sports teams, including the Detroit Tigers and Vancouver Canucks.
RCB and CSK Follow Mumbai Indians
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) rank second among IPL franchises, with a valuation of $1.85 billion (₹17,626.8 crore). Chennai Super Kings (CSK) occupy third place at $1.75 billion (₹16,674 crore).
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are valued at $1.73 billion (₹16,483.44 crore), placing them just above the IPL’s average franchise valuation of $1.7 billion (₹16,197.6 crore). Delhi Capitals match that average exactly.

The remaining franchises are valued slightly below the league average. Rajasthan Royals are worth $1.65 billion (₹15,721.2 crore), followed by SunRisers Hyderabad at $1.62 billion (₹15,435.36 crore) and Gujarat Titans at $1.58 billion (₹15,054.24 crore). Punjab Kings is valued at $1.53 billion (₹14,577.84 crore) and Lucknow Super Giants complete the list of 10 teams with a valuation of $1.5 billion (approximately ₹14,292 crore).
IPL Franchise Values Have Grown by Around 1,800%
The financial growth of the IPL has been remarkable since the franchises were first introduced in 2008. According to the report, their combined valuation growth over this period has reached around 1,800%.
This growth is higher than that of other major sports leagues. The National Football League (NFL) has recorded growth of around 800%, while the National Basketball Association (NBA) has grown by just under 1,700% over the same period.

These figures highlight how the IPL has developed into one of the world’s most valuable sports leagues.
How Do IPL Teams Make Money?
A major share of IPL franchises’ income comes from the BCCI’s central revenue pool, which is mainly funded by television broadcasting and digital media rights. According to the report, each franchise receives approximately $50–55 million (₹476.4–523 crore) annually from the BCCI under the current deals.
The BCCI retains half of the media rights revenue after accounting for production costs. Of the remaining amount, around 90% is distributed equally among the 10 franchises, while the other 10% is linked to team performance.
Apart from the central revenue pool, IPL teams earn money through several other sources, including ticket sales, sponsorships and commercial partnerships. Merchandise sales and other franchise-related deals also contribute to their overall income.
The average IPL franchise generated an estimated $74.4 million (₹708.9 crore) in total revenue during the 2026 season.

Why Are IPL Franchises So Profitable?
One of the biggest advantages for IPL teams is their ability to control costs. Auction salary caps help franchises manage player expenses, while their capital expenditure is also among the lowest in the world. This combination of strong revenue streams and controlled spending helps teams maintain healthy profit margins. According to the report, some franchises generate profit margins of more than 30%.
With billion-dollar valuations, substantial annual revenues and strong commercial opportunities, IPL franchises have become some of the most attractive assets in the global sports business. Mumbai Indians lead the valuation rankings but the financial strength of all 10 franchises shows just how far the IPL has grown since its launch in 2008.
