As the IPL 2026 approaches, all eyes are once again on MS Dhoni but this time, it’s not just about his performance. It’s about his future and the role he will play in a changing Chennai Super Kings setup.

Over the past couple of seasons, CSK have already begun planning for life after Dhoni. Ruturaj Gaikwad has taken over captaincy duties, while Sanju Samson joined the squad last year and is expected to take on more responsibility, possibly even as the first-choice wicketkeeper.
This shift raises a big question—where does that leave Dhoni?
Much will depend on his fitness. The veteran has been dealing with a knee issue for a while now, which has affected his movement and even pushed him lower down the batting order in recent seasons. If Sanju Samson takes over wicketkeeping duties, Dhoni’s role could become even more limited.

There is growing talk that Dhoni might be used as an “Impact Player”, a role where he would not be on the field throughout the match. However, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that such a move would not suit Dhoni’s strengths.
He explained that Mahi’s biggest value lies in his ability to read the game and make decisions in real time, something that can only happen when he is actively on the field. According to him, leadership in cricket requires presence and Dhoni’s sharp thinking and calm decision-making are what set him apart.
Aakash Chopra also hinted that this season could possibly be Dhoni’s last. With a clear successor already in place and Sanju Samson likely to eventually take over wicketkeeping duties, he feels that if Dhoni is reduced to a limited role like an Impact Player, it may be a sign that it’s time for him to step away from the game.

Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis shared a similar perspective but with a slightly different focus. He believes that while Dhoni’s batting has always been admired, it’s his tactical brilliance that truly makes him invaluable.
Faf du Plessis pointed out that CSK may not have initially expected Dhoni to play as long as he has, which is why they have been preparing the next generation of leaders. He praised Gaikwad’s captaincy and noted that the team missed him last season due to injury.

However, for Faf du Plessis, Dhoni’s real strength is his cricketing brain, his ability to read situations, set fields and guide the team under pressure. He feels that as long as Dhoni is part of the team, his presence on the field remains crucial.
With new leaders stepping up and MS Dhoni’s role evolving, the IPL 2026 could turn out to be a defining season, not just for CSK but for one of the greatest icons of cricket.
