Kevin Pietersen Claims His International Career Suffered Because Of IPL, Slams ECB Heavily

Kevin Pietersen was one of England’s most exciting and aggressive batters, known for his bold style and match-winning performances. A former captain, he played a key role in many victories but his international career ended earlier than expected.

Now, Kevin Pietersen has opened up about why that happened. He believes his England career was cut short because of ongoing issues with the England and Wales Cricket Board, mainly over his decision to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

When the IPL started in 2008, the ECB did not allow centrally contracted England players to participate. That year, only one England cricketer Dimitri Mascarenhas played for Rajasthan Royals. In 2009, the board relaxed the rule slightly but players were allowed to join only for a short three-week period.

Kevin Pietersen, with his attacking style, was a perfect fit for the IPL. However, choosing to play in the league for Royal Challengers Bengaluru created tension between him and the England cricket system. Over time, this affected his position in the national team.

He said that his decisions came at a heavy cost, as he believes he sacrificed a longer international career. Kevin Pietersen feels he could have played around 150 to 160 Test matches and scored 12,000 to 13,000 runs. Instead, his career ended at the age of 33 after 104 Tests.

He also claimed that the ECB’s actions during that time, along with negative media attention, made things more difficult for him. While he did not go into full detail, he suggested that the situation was widely discussed and affected his career.

Despite everything, Kevin Pietersen finished with strong numbers – 8,181 Test runs, including 23 centuries and 35 fifties.

Looking back, he believes his struggles helped future England players. According to him, players like Jos Buttler now have more freedom to play franchise cricket because of the sacrifices he made.

Kevin Pietersen last played in the IPL in 2016. Since then, he has remained active in cricket through commentary and mentoring roles with Delhi Capitals.
