Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has come out in support of captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, despite his disappointing performances in the IPL 2026.

Ruturaj Gaikwad has scored only 63 runs in five innings so far this season. In several matches, he has looked cautious at the crease, often playing slowly instead of attacking. His strike rate of 105 reflects this approach. One possible reason for this could be the pressure of holding the innings together, especially when the middle order looked uncertain at the start of the season due to the absence of MS Dhoni and Dewald Brevis. However, even after Dewald Brevis returned, Ruturaj Gaikwad’s form did not improve significantly.
Stephen Fleming explained that the team is working on multiple aspects, including Gaikwad’s batting and leadership. Fleming held the nature of T20 format responsible for Gaikwad’s poor form as he suggested that in the T20 format, players can go through phases where runs don’t come easily, even if they are training well and staying positive. According to him, Gaikwad is putting in the effort, showing good intent in practice, and maintaining the right mindset, it’s just that his performances haven’t translated into big scores yet.

The coach emphasised that Ruturaj Gaikwad is a proven player and has delivered consistently in the past. He believes that once Gaikwad regains form, he can make a strong impact. Fleming also pointed out that in a long tournament like the IPL, it’s normal for players to go in and out of form. What matters is that the team supports each other and performs collectively during such phases.
With CSK securing back-to-back wins recently, some pressure has eased on Ruturaj Gaikwad as captain. However, questions remain about his place in the playing XI, especially with Dhoni expected to return soon. This creates uncertainty about how the team will adjust its lineup.
There have been suggestions that Gaikwad could move down to the number three position, where he might be more comfortable, especially against spin. This change could also allow a more aggressive batter like Ayush Mhatre to take advantage of the powerplay. Despite these ideas, CSK have not yet made such a move.
Stephen Fleming made it clear that the team is considering different strategies but continues to fully back their captain. He remains confident that Gaikwad’s form will return soon and that he is too talented not to contribute significantly to the team’s campaign.
