The Indian team selection for the one-off Test against Afghanistan has sparked a major debate among cricket fans and experts. While several expected domestic performers were rewarded, one name missing from the squad has created serious controversy. Auqib Nabi, who has been one of the best bowlers in domestic cricket over the last two seasons, was left out despite delivering remarkable performances for Jammu and Kashmir in the Ranji Trophy.

The right-arm pacer has been in outstanding form recently. Across the last two Ranji Trophy seasons, Auqib Nabi picked up a combined total of 104 wickets. He was also the leading wicket-taker last season and played a key role in Jammu and Kashmir’s historic title-winning campaign earlier this year.

Because of those performances, many believed Auqib Nabi would finally receive his maiden India call-up. However, the selectors decided to pick uncapped Punjab pacer Gurnoor Brar instead as backup for Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna.

The decision quickly drew criticism from former India selector Dodda Ganesh, who openly questioned the selection panel’s reasoning. Dodda Ganesh said it was difficult to understand how a player with more than 100 wickets across two seasons could be ignored in favour of someone with very little domestic experience this season.

He also expressed concern about the message such decisions send to young domestic cricketers. According to Dodda Ganesh, players who consistently perform in tournaments like the Ranji Trophy should feel that their hard work will eventually be rewarded at the national level.

Dodda Ganesh tweeted, “No amount of justification can convince me of the non-selection of Aquib Nabi. Poor guy bowled his heart out for two seasons and picked 100+ #RanjiTrophy wickets only to be ignored for someone who had played just 2 games this season. Please stop this nonsensical justifications: Hit the deck bowler, hit the head bowler, hence picked. While I can understand they are special skill sets, it can’t be rewarded without decent game time, by ignoring someone with unprecedented performances for seasons. I’m afraid, a wrong message has been sent out to the youngsters who are giving their heart and soul in the #RanjiTrophy”

India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar later explained that Auqib Nabi’s name was discussed during selection meetings. He admitted that the Jammu and Kashmir pacer had delivered incredible performances over the last two seasons and came close to selection.

However, Ajit Agarkar said the team management eventually chose to go with the current pace options because Test squads in Indian conditions usually do not include too many seamers. He added that the selectors were satisfied with the three fast bowlers already picked in the squad.

Despite the explanation, the debate around Auqib Nabi’s omission continues growing. Many fans and former players believe his performances deserved recognition and that domestic cricket achievements should carry more importance during national team selection.
