Mohsin Naqvi’s tenure as the chairman of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) could come to an end next year, with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president and former international captain Tamim Iqbal reportedly interested in taking over the position.
Mohsin Naqvi is currently serving a two-year term as ACC chairman. Although he can seek an extension and there has been a precedent for extending the tenure, reports suggest that he may no longer have the backing of at least three of the five full member nations — India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
According to a cricket portal, Mohsin Naqvi could try to continue in the position until the ACC Annual General Meeting (AGM). However, getting another term could be difficult because the ACC presidency normally operates on a two-year rotational basis. The report also stated that Tamim Iqbal wants to replace Mohsin Naqvi as ACC chairman and has already communicated his interest to the member nations.
The ACC chairmanship rotates among its full members and requires unanimous approval. Mohsin Naqvi received unanimous support when he became chairman in 2025, before the Pahalgam ter*or @tt@ck and the controversy surrounding the men’s Asia Cup.
Before Mohsin Naqvi, India’s Jay Shah served as ACC chairman from 2022 to 2024. Jay Shah, who was BCCI secretary at that time and is now the ICC chairman, served for three years after the members unanimously agreed to the arrangement. Sri Lanka was also part of the unanimous decision despite agreeing not to take the presidency during that period.
The possibility of a change at the top could be significant for India. The ACC plays an important role in developing and supporting cricket at the grassroots level across Asia. However, Mohsin Naqvi’s tenure has also been marked by several political and administrative controversies.
India refused to accept the men’s and women’s Asia Cup trophies from Mohsin Naqvi. On both the occasions, Mohsin Naqvi reportedly remained firm on personally handing over the silverware rather than allowing another official to do so.
Mohsin Naqvi also met Tamim Iqbal in early 2026 during a period of tension between India and Bangladesh. The situation included the controversy surrounding Bangladesh cricketer Mustafizur Rahman, which was followed by Bangladesh pulling out of the T20 World Cup.
At the time, Mohsin Naqvi was holding meetings in Bangladesh while the country’s then government had strained relations with India. However, Tamim Iqbal’s position reportedly changed after he became BCB president in June. He spoke about improving Bangladesh’s relationship with India and later indicated that the decision to withdraw from the T20 World Cup had been a mistake.
If Tamim Iqbal takes over as ACC chairman, his approach towards India could be different from that of Mohsin Naqvi, particularly given his stated interest in improving cricketing relations between the two countries.
