Senior Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma had a special reason behind his unusual celebration after completing his century against the West Indies on Wednesday, September 30. However, the Indian opener chose not to reveal what it meant.
Rohit produced a stunning knock during India’s chase of West Indies’ massive 406-run target in Guwahati. India won the match by eight wickets with more than six overs remaining, with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill putting together a dominant opening partnership.

The century was also a major milestone for Rohit as he completed 12,000 runs in ODI cricket. He reached his 33rd ODI hundred in just 72 balls, getting to the landmark with a single off Vitel Lawes in the 26th over.
Instead of his usual celebration, Rohit Sharma performed a unique jog that looked almost like a skipping march while moving across the pitch. When broadcasters asked him about the celebration after the match, Rohit made it clear that he wanted to keep its meaning private. He explained that it was personal and not something he wanted to share publicly.
Ravindra Jadeja was also curious about the celebration. During the second innings, the two were seen having a conversation and Ravi Shastri later asked Rohit Sharma whether Jadeja had questioned him about it. Rohit confirmed that Jadeja had indeed asked about the celebration. He told Jadeja that he would explain it later in the dressing room. Rohit also revealed that Jadeja had suggested a more energetic celebration involving a slide and a jump. However, Rohit joked that such a celebration was not practical after spending almost 50 overs on the field and then batting for around 25 to 30 overs.

On the field, Rohit Sharma was the more aggressive of India’s two openers early in the chase, while Shubman Gill initially played a more controlled innings. India reached 44 without loss inside seven overs before Rohit began attacking the West Indies pacers. He hit Jayden Seales for a six and then took on Alzarri Joseph, hitting him for a six and a four.
Rohit Sharma brought up his half-century from just 34 balls. He continued his attack in the ninth over against Keemo Paul, smashing a four and two sixes. One of those sixes came off a free hit after Keemo Paul overstepped. Rohit also hit Roston Chase for a six as India moved past the 150-run mark. During the 16th over, Rohit reached another major milestone by completing 12,000 ODI runs. He became only the third Indian batter to achieve the feat after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.
Rohit had a nervous moment when he survived a catch after reaching 84. He quickly responded by hitting consecutive fours off Vitel Lawes to move from 85 to 99 before completing his century with a single. By that stage, India had already crossed 250 without losing a wicket.

After the match, Rohit Sharma explained that the opening pair did not allow the size of the target to affect their approach. They focused on playing each delivery according to its merit and continued building their partnership. He praised Shubman Gill for remaining composed throughout the innings and highlighted how important it was to keep putting together big partnerships while chasing such a large target. Shubman Gill eventually stayed unbeaten until the end, helping India complete a remarkable chase with more than six overs to spare.
While Rohit Sharma’s 33rd ODI century and 12,000-run milestone were the major achievements of the night, his mysterious celebration became another talking point. Despite repeated questions, the former Indian captain made it clear that the meaning behind the gesture would remain something personal to him.
