Shubman Gill has added another remarkable achievement to his growing list of records. India’s Test and ODI captain made history on Tuesday, October 13, by becoming the first cricketer in the world to win the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award five times.

The right-handed batter from Punjab earned the honour following two outstanding performances in ODIs against the West Indies in September. Shubman Gill scored 110 runs in Thiruvananthapuram and followed it up with a magnificent 223 in Guwahati, producing scores of 110 and 223 in the two matches.
His performances helped him beat fellow Indian batter Abhishek Sharma and Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza to claim the award. Abhishek also had an eventful September. He played three T20Is against Afghanistan, led by Ibrahim Zadran, in New Delhi, scoring 82, 39 and 108 runs. He also featured in India’s first-ever T20I against Japan in Sano, where he was dismissed for a golden duck.

Meanwhile, Sikandar Raza impressed in Zimbabwe’s ODI series against Australia. He played three matches in September, scoring 57, 45 and an unbeaten 81. Along with his contributions with the bat, Sikandar Raza also picked up three wickets.
Despite the strong performances from his competitors, Shubman Gill’s two big ODI innings helped him secure the prestigious award. This is Shubman Gill’s fifth ICC Player of the Month award. He previously received the honour in January 2023, September 2023, February 2025 and July 2025. Before Shubman Gill’s latest achievement, Sanju Samson was the most recent Indian to win the ICC Player of the Month award. Sanju Samson received the honour in March after scoring 97 not out, 89 and 89 in T20 World Cup 2026 matches against the West Indies, England and New Zealand.

Shubman Gill expressed his happiness at winning the award for the fifth time and thanked the voting panel for recognising his performances. He also highlighted how satisfying it was to score heavily while helping India complete successful run chases in front of home supporters, whose encouragement gave the team an additional boost.
Apart from celebrating his personal achievement, Shubman Gill spoke about how ODI cricket has changed in recent years. According to the Indian captain, the format has become significantly faster, making it important for batters to make quick decisions, assess match conditions and adjust their approach according to the pitch.

Shubman Gill also has his eyes on next year’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which will be held in southern Africa. He stressed that India must continue improving and work towards building a balanced, well-rounded squad capable of handling the challenges of the tournament.
With five ICC Men’s Player of the Month awards now to his name, Shubman Gill has established a unique record in international cricket. His latest recognition also comes at an important time as he leads India’s preparations for future challenges, including the next ODI World Cup.
