Bengaluru could once again become a special place in Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s cricketing journey. The experienced Indian pacer has received a surprise early call-up to the national team at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where India are playing, after an injury scare involving Arshdeep Singh prompted the BCCI to speed up his return.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar was already at Bengaluru’s Centre of Excellence, preparing for his comeback during the T20I series against New Zealand later this month. However, the concern over an impact injury to Arshdeep led to the fast bowler being called up earlier than expected.
If selected in the playing XI, Bhuvneshwar Kumar will feature in a T20 International for the first time in approximately four years. Arshdeep Singh has not been ruled out yet but India also have concerns over the performances of Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav, both of whom have proved expensive.
With his experience, control and ability to swing the ball, Bhuvneshwar Kumar could provide India with valuable options. His familiarity with the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, known for its relatively short boundaries, could also work in his favour.

The venue holds plenty of memories for the pacer. From making his India debut around a decade ago to enjoying successful IPL campaigns, Bengaluru has witnessed several important moments in his career. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has taken 29 wickets across formats at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, including 26 in the IPL and three in T20 Internationals. Interestingly, he has never played a Test match at this venue.
His IPL record at the ground includes 26 wickets in 19 innings at an average of 23.35, a strike rate of 16.58 and an economy rate of 8.45. Across 71.5 overs, he has conceded 607 runs. His best IPL bowling figures at the venue are 3/26 against Delhi Capitals on April 18, 2026.
The 2026 season has been particularly productive for him at the ground. He has claimed 11 wickets in five matches, including three-wicket hauls against Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals. His list of notable IPL dismissals at the venue includes Virat Kohli, whom he has dismissed twice, along with Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant and Jos Buttler.
However, Bengaluru has also witnessed a difficult outing for the pacer. His most expensive IPL performance at the ground came in April 2024, when he conceded 60 runs without taking a wicket against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

One of Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s most memorable performances at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium came during his T20I debut against Pakistan on December 25, 2012. The right-arm pacer produced an outstanding spell, taking 3 wickets for just 9 runs in four overs at an economy rate of 2.25. His victims included Nasir Jamshed, Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal. That performance remains his best bowling figures at the Bengaluru venue in T20 Internationals. His only ODI appearance at the ground came against Australia on November 2, 2013. On that occasion, he failed to take a wicket, conceding 47 runs in eight overs.
As Bhuvneshwar Kumar prepares for a possible return to India’s T20I setup, his experience and impressive record at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium could prove valuable. If he gets an opportunity in the playing XI, the Bengaluru venue could provide the perfect setting for the veteran pacer to make a memorable comeback.
