India’s bowling combination has come under scrutiny after the first T20I and former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik has suggested a change that could help the team strengthen its spin attack. DK believes Bhuvneshwar Kumar can bat higher in the lower order, potentially allowing India to include an additional spinner in the playing XI.

With just two days remaining before the second T20I, India’s team combination has become a talking point. In the opening match, India played without a specialist spinner, leaving Axar Patel as their only frontline spin option. The team also depended on all-rounders to provide depth in the lower middle order, with one of them batting as low as No. 8 after the five specialist batters.
India’s bowling problems continued as they conceded 225 runs in the match, with captain Shreyas Iyer having only five bowling options at his disposal. However, India’s strong batting depth allowed them to attack during the run chase.
Speaking on a show, Dinesh Karthik said Bhuvneshwar Kumar was capable of contributing with the bat and could perform the role Nitish Kumar Reddy played in the first T20I. According to DK, Bhuvneshwar could rotate the strike and help keep the scoreboard moving, even if he is not expected to score heavily.

Dinesh Karthik suggested that if the team management trusted Bhuvneshwar Kumar to bat at No. 8, India could reconsider their combination and bring in an extra spinner. However, he acknowledged that the team does not currently appear to have that level of confidence in Bhuvneshwar’s batting at that position.
The former cricketer also pointed out that Bhuvneshwar Kumar would be more comfortable batting at No. 9 than at No. 8. He believes India would prefer to have Axar Patel bat at No. 8, indicating that the team continues to trust Axar’s ability to contribute with the ball even if they struggle to take wickets during the middle overs.
In the first T20I, Nitish Kumar Reddy scored two runs off three deliveries and stayed at the crease while Naman Dhir completed the chase at the other end. Bhuvneshwar was next in line to bat if India had lost another wicket.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has considerable experience batting at No. 8 in both international cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, since the introduction of the IPL’s Impact Player rule, which allows teams to bring in an additional player and strengthens their batting options, he has batted at that position only once in the tournament.
With the second T20I approaching, India’s team management now faces a crucial decision. Promoting Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the batting order could provide an opportunity to add another spinner but the team would first need to trust his ability to handle the responsibility with the bat.
