England captain Harry Brook produced a stunning double century but his incredible effort ended in defeat as Sri Lanka pulled off a remarkable run chase in Rawalpindi. Despite scoring 202 runs, Harry Brook became the batter with the highest individual score in the ODI history in a losing cause.

Batting first, England put up a huge total, with Harry Brook becoming the first English cricketer to score a double century in One Day Internationals. However, Sri Lanka matched England’s aggressive batting and successfully chased down the target, finishing at 430/8.
Star all-rounder Janith Liyanage sealed the victory by hitting a six off the second-last ball of the match. Sri Lanka needed eight runs in the final over and lost two wickets to England pacer Josh Tongue before Janith Liyanage held his nerve to complete a memorable win. It was the second highest successful run chase in the ODI history against England.

Harry Brook’s 202 now tops the list of the highest individual ODI scores in matches that ended in defeat. Charles Coventry previously held the record with an unbeaten 194 against Bangladesh in Bulawayo in 2009. Fakhar Zaman scored 193 against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2021, while George Munsey made 191 against the Netherlands in Dundee in 2025. Matthew Hayden’s unbeaten 181 against New Zealand in Hamilton in 2007 completes the top five.
Charles Coventry had earlier played a key role in Zimbabwe’s first-innings total of 312 against Bangladesh in 2009. However, Tamim Iqbal’s brilliant 154 helped Bangladesh chase down the target in the 48th over. Despite Zimbabwe losing the match, Charles Coventry was named the Player of the Match for his outstanding performance.

This time, Harry Brook’s historic innings was overshadowed by Sri Lanka’s batting heroics, particularly Pavan Rathnayake, who scored 130 off 106 balls to lead the successful chase. Avishka Fernando and Dasun Shanaka also made major contributions, with both batters falling just short of centuries after scoring 97 runs each.
The match also created another major record. A total of 859 runs were scored on Thursday, making it the highest match aggregate in an ODI between England and Sri Lanka. England all-rounder Sam Curran endured a difficult outing with the ball, conceding 103 runs. This surpassed his own record for the most runs conceded by an England bowler in a single ODI innings.

Meanwhile, South Africa continue to hold the record for the highest successful run chase in the ODI history. They chased down a target of 435 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.
Although Harry Brook’s double century will be remembered as a landmark achievement for English cricket, Sri Lanka’s fearless batting turned the match into an unforgettable contest. Their stunning chase ensured that Harry Brook’s record-breaking performance became one of the most remarkable individual efforts to end in defeat in ODI cricket.
