India’s aggressive batting approach is not dependent on the size of the target, according to star wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson. He explained that the team follows the same attacking mindset while chasing, with its strategy changing according to the different phases of the match.

Sanju Samson played a match-winning role in India’s four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the opening match of the five-game T20I series in Christchurch. He smashed 67 runs off just 33 balls, hitting eight boundaries and four sixes.
His explosive innings helped India make a flying start while chasing New Zealand’s massive target of 226 runs. The visitors scored 93 runs in the powerplay, putting the hosts under immediate pressure. India eventually reached 230/6 in 19.4 overs, recording their highest ever successful run chase in T20I cricket.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Sanju Samson explained that India’s approach would not have changed significantly even if they had been chasing a smaller target. However, the team adjusts its strategy depending on whether it is batting in the powerplay, middle overs or death overs.
He further explained that when the team gets off to a strong start, it looks to take maximum advantage of the powerplay and put the opposition under pressure early. Even while chasing a target of around 170 runs, India would try to finish the contest quickly if the opening overs went well. Sanju Samson added that this attacking approach has worked effectively for the team over the past couple of years.

India appeared to be cruising towards victory after reaching 94/1 in the powerplay. However, a collapse during the middle overs brought New Zealand back into the contest and made the chase much tighter than expected.
Captain Shreyas Iyer contributed 42 runs, while Naman Dhir played a crucial unbeaten knock of 42 off just 15 deliveries. Their contributions helped India cross the finish line at 230/6, with two balls remaining. Following the thrilling opening encounter, both the teams will meet again in the second T20I at Hagley Oval on Saturday, October 24.
