India’s explosive batting display left even captain Shreyas Iyer struggling to believe what he had witnessed. Openers Abhishek Sharma and 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi delivered a stunning performance to help India defeat New Zealand by six wickets in the third T20I in Wellington on Tuesday. The convincing victory gave India an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five-match T20I series, with two matches still remaining.
Chasing a challenging target of 199 runs, India got off to a sensational start as Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi attacked the New Zealand bowlers from the very first over. The left-handed opening pair smashed 118 runs in the powerplay, setting a new record for the highest score in the first six overs of a men’s T20 International by a full-member nation. India also reached the 100-run mark in just five overs, leaving Shreyas Iyer amazed by the incredible pace of the scoring.
Speaking after the match, Shreyas Iyer admitted that he had never seen a team score 100 runs in only five overs at the international level. He described the extraordinary batting display as one of the most remarkable performances he had witnessed. The Indian captain was also impressed by the quality and timing of the shots played by both openers. Their aggressive approach was even more surprising because the pitch offered movement to the seam bowlers.
Shreyas Iyer explained that when he and Sanju Samson came out to bat, they noticed that the ball was moving off the pitch. This made him wonder how Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had managed to score so freely against the same bowling attack. He praised their batting as a spectacular display that was a pleasure to watch, adding that their performance had left him completely amazed.
The remarkable partnership between Abhishek Sharma and teenage Vaibhav Sooryavanshi proved decisive in India’s successful chase. Their fearless batting not only helped India secure another victory but also created a memorable moment in the series.
With India already holding an unassailable 3-0 lead, the team’s dominant performance has further highlighted the impact of its young batting talent.
