New Zealand’s strong winds could pose a serious challenge for India in the upcoming Test series and bowling coach Morne Morkel has come up with an unusual preparation tip for his players. His advice? Stand in front of a powerful fan at home to get a feel for the conditions they may face in Wellington.

India are currently in New Zealand for the white-ball leg of the tour. However, the coaching staff has already started preparing the Test specialists for the challenging conditions at the Basin Reserve, which will host the first of the two Tests beginning on November 18.
Speaking ahead of the third T20I, Morne Morkel revealed that some players had contacted him from India to ask about the local conditions. He advised them to experience strong winds before arriving in Wellington, where wind gusts reportedly reached 120 kmph on Monday.
The former South African fast bowler explained that players needed to prepare for the wind well in advance rather than expect to adjust immediately after reaching New Zealand.
Morne Morkel also recalled his own experience of playing in Wellington and highlighted how powerful the winds could be. He said the conditions were so extreme that even the hotel building appeared to shake.
The strong winds could affect batters by disturbing their stance and balance at the crease. Bowlers may also struggle to maintain their rhythm, accuracy and direction while delivering the ball in such conditions.
Morne Morkel stressed that India must treat the weather as a challenge to overcome rather than an excuse for poor performances. He also pointed out that the bowling attack would need players willing to bowl directly into the wind.
According to the coach, India cannot depend on every bowler having the advantage of the wind behind them. At least one or more bowlers must be ready to take on the difficult end and deliver effective spells despite the conditions.
With the first Test approaching, adapting to Wellington’s unpredictable weather could prove crucial to India’s chances in the series. Morne Morkel’s unusual fan suggestion may sound simple but it highlights just how seriously the team is taking the challenge ahead.
