India head coach Gautam Gambhir believes that bowlers deserve the biggest share of credit when a team wins an overseas Test or ODI series. He has urged Indian cricket fans not to focus only on the batting performances and give the bowling attack the recognition it deserves if India performs well in the upcoming One-Day International series.
Gautam Gambhir made these comments on Sunday (November 1), following India’s T20I series victory over New Zealand. India won the first three matches to secure the series before suffering defeats in the final two games.

The Indian team will now shift its attention to a five-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting November 4. However, Gautam Gambhir believes that India’s bowling attack faces a challenging task because of its lack of experience.
Only Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav from the current bowling attack were part of India’s squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup. Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the series, while Prasidh Krishna is unavailable due to injury. As a result, India will enter the series with a relatively inexperienced bowling unit.
Gautam Gambhir pointed out that India’s batting lineup has plenty of experience but the bowling attack will have to prove itself against New Zealand. He stressed that overseas ODI and Test series are generally won by bowlers, making their contribution extremely important. He also urged fans to give the bowlers proper credit if India manages to achieve success in the upcoming ODI matches instead of discussing the batters’ performances alone.

India to Use Two Different Squads During New Zealand ODI Series
India will field slightly different squads for the five-match ODI series. The team will use one group for the first three matches and another for the final two games. This arrangement has been made because Shubman Gill and some other players who regularly feature in India’s Test team will leave the ODI squad early to prepare for upcoming red-ball commitments. With several experienced players unavailable for the entire series, the bowling unit will have an important responsibility in India’s campaign.
Gautam Gambhir Backs Shreyas After T20I Series
Apart from discussing India’s bowling strength, Gautam Gambhir also praised Shreyas Iyer for his captaincy during the T20I series against New Zealand. Captaincy in the shortest format often attracts mixed reactions depending on the team’s results. Shreyas received considerable praise after India won the first three T20Is in a row but faced criticism following defeats in the final two matches.

However, Gautam Gambhir strongly backed him and praised the way he handled a relatively inexperienced bowling attack. The India head coach felt that Shreyas Iyer had done an excellent job despite having limited experience and options in the bowling department. He also pointed out that a captain’s performance is closely linked to how well the team’s batters and bowlers execute their responsibilities.
Gautam Gambhir particularly highlighted the challenge of managing an inexperienced bowling unit and referred to Shreyas Iyer’ captaincy as outstanding under the circumstances.
India will now look to carry their momentum into the ODI series against New Zealand, with the bowling attack expected to play a crucial role in determining the team’s success.
