Chennai Super Kings (CSK) could make a major decision ahead of the IPL 2027 auction, with reports suggesting that the five-time champions are considering releasing one of their most expensive uncapped signings.

CSK had spent a massive Rs 14.2 crore at last year’s IPL mini auction to sign two uncapped players, all-rounder Prashant Veer and wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma. However, following an underwhelming IPL 2026 campaign, Prashant could reportedly be on his way out of the franchise.
According to a report, CSK are considering releasing the 20-year-old left-arm spin all-rounder as they evaluate their squad ahead of the next season. Prashant Veer represents Uttar Pradesh in domestic cricket. In 15 T20 matches, he has scored 202 runs at an impressive strike rate of 150.74 and an average economy rate of 6.81 with the ball. He has also picked up 12 wickets in the format.
However, his IPL 2026 performances did not live up to expectations. In six innings for CSK, Prashant Veer scored 90 runs, with 43 of those coming in a single innings against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). With the ball, he bowled only two overs and failed to take a wicket.
Prashant Veer attracted considerable attention because of his impressive performances in the 2025 UP T20 League. He was named the Emerging Player of the Season after scoring 320 runs at an average of 64 and a strike rate of more than 155. He also contributed with the ball, taking eight wickets at an economy rate of 6.69. His all-round performances made him an attractive prospect, prompting CSK to invest heavily in him at the IPL mini auction.
While Prashant Veer struggled to make a significant impact, Kartik Sharma enjoyed a comparatively better debut IPL season. The 20-year-old wicketkeeper-batter scored 295 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 136.57. He also registered two half-centuries, with his highest score being 71 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). His performances have given CSK a more encouraging return on their investment compared to Prashant Veer. Despite reports of Prashant potentially being released, CSK have not taken a final decision on their player retentions and releases.
According to the report, all 10 IPL franchises must announce their retention lists by November 15. Releasing Prashant Veer could give CSK a significant financial advantage heading into the mini auction. This would be in addition to the annual salary cap increase of Rs 5 crore that each franchise is allowed. Interestingly, CSK could also consider bringing Prashant back into the squad at the mini auction, potentially at a lower price.
The IPL 2027 mini auction is expected to take place on December 16 in Goa. CSK’s final decisions on their retentions and releases will therefore be crucial in determining their auction strategy for the upcoming season.
