The newspaper daily, The Hindu came up with a story in 2010 which said that the branded honey that is being sold in India is infected. After this, Centre for Science and Environment tested honey products of 12 companies which included Himalaya, Dabur, Patanjali, Baidyanath, Khadi and two foreign companies which were based in Australia and Switzerland. The finding of these tests was shocking as the levels of harmful antibiotics in 11 samples were very high.

The foreign countries have very strict compliances when it comes to the parameter of quality of product, either they have banned the antibiotics or they have been very strict with the use of antibiotics in honey by regulating it. So it simply means that most of the Indian companies are using double standards by exporting good quality products and selling infectious products in the local Indian market, as there is lack of regulations or the regulations are not imposed strictly.

The director of CSE, Sunita Narain said this to a newspaper, “It is clear that foreign companies are taking advantage of the lack of regulations in India. After all, if our government does not care about the health of its people, why should these companies care?”
