On January 28, Thursday, names of first 20 cities which will be turned into smart cities were announced by Union govt. This is what Venkaiah Naidu, urban development minister, stated at the time of announcement, “Implementation of smart cities plan will showcase integrated planning. The investment of Rs 50,802 crores has been proposed in selected smart cities and towns during the five-year period.”
He further maintained, “There are five capital cities among the 20 smart cities chosen.” “A consortium of only Indian companies was chosen for plans of nine cities from the 20 cities chosen,” said Naidu.
There was a proposal of 97 cities from state govts. and the chosen ones would boast proficient urban transportation, e-governance mechanisms, IT connectivity and basic infrastructure. In future, 40 cities are being planned to be turned into smart cities by the govt.
