HL Dattu, the former Chief justice of India, who is now the chairperson of National Human Rights Commission, revealed a horrific image from a government funded home for disabled children.

Dattu thought of randomly inspecting government run homes for disabled children, and when he did so, he was shocked to see 49 children sharing 1 toothbrush and having just 1 toothpaste.
He stated “It is not important to say in which state I saw 49 children using one toothbrush as that is the condition in most government-aided or government-run homes housing disabled children, who are the most neglected lot”.

Dattu further stated that he had seen lot of sad conditions in government run facilities and old age homes. After Dattu’s retirement as CJI and before his appointment as the chairperson of NHRC, he used to spend a lot of time in Bengaluru’s old-age homes every day.
He also stated that “There is no dearth of government grant for upkeep of facilities at the homes for disabled and senior citizens. We need to stop the pilferage of money, and [instead] use it to improve the basic facilities for them,”
HL Dattu says that it would be the happiest moment in his life when he achieves success in making a difference in the prevailing conditions in homes for disabled children and old-age homes.
