Indian cricket’s latest young sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has created an exciting selection challenge for the T20I team. His impressive performances have made it difficult for the management to leave him out but giving him a place in the playing XI means another player has to make way.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is an opener, while Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have already established themselves as the current opening options for India. Both have produced performances strong enough to deserve a consistent run.
Abhishek Sharma has repeatedly shown that he represents the fearless new generation of Indian batters. He is comfortable attacking from the very first ball and putting the opposition under pressure immediately.
That often leaves Sanju Samson under greater scrutiny. Whenever he has a couple of low scores, questions quickly start emerging about whether he deserves his place in the team. Such discussions have become even more common since Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s impressive rise.
However, it is important to remember Sanju Samson’s recent contribution to Indian cricket. Just a few months ago, he produced three consecutive brilliant innings that helped India win their third T20 World Cup title at home. Despite that achievement, Sanju Samson continues to face questions about his place in the team. So, how does he deal with this constant pressure?
Sanju Samson believes scrutiny is almost impossible to avoid in the era of social media. At the same time, his experience as an IPL captain has helped him understand why difficult decisions sometimes have to be made.
He has also experienced the situation himself. During India’s England tour earlier this year, Sanju Samson was left out of the XI to make room for young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
Speaking to reporters after starring in India’s big victory over Afghanistan in the second T20I on Tuesday night, Sanju Samson explained that the management had a difficult decision to make. He said that managing an Indian team is never simple, especially when a 15-year-old player has scored around 700-800 runs in the IPL and has been performing exceptionally well before an important tournament. In such circumstances, finding a way to include an in-form youngster becomes understandable.
Sanju Samson also acknowledged that he had not performed in two or three matches, which made the decision easier from the team’s perspective. He added that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was in excellent form and wanted to help India win games during the series. Having himself taken several difficult decisions as an IPL captain, Sanju Samson said he understood the thinking behind the selection call.
For Sanju Samson, communication is the key when players are involved in difficult selection decisions. He revealed that there had been considerable communication during the middle of the series and even before the current series began. Head coach Gautam Gambhir had spoken to him extensively, helping him understand the situation.
According to Sanju Samson, making unpopular decisions is never easy. While popular decisions may be simpler to take, the leadership group sometimes has to make difficult choices by keeping the team’s interests ahead of individual players. That, he believes, is where the leadership group deserves credit.
With Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson all competing for limited spots at the top of the order, India’s T20I selection is likely to remain an interesting talking point. For Sanju Samson, however, understanding the bigger picture and maintaining clear communication can make even the toughest decisions easier to handle.
It’s good to hear that communication is taking place in a good manner within the team.
