The Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is one of the biggest stars of the world and every movie magazine likes to publish articles about him and wants to interview him but you will be shocked to know that there was a time when a magazine refused to publish SRK’s interview.
Yes, you read that right!
The famous screenwriter Mushtaq Sheikh appeared on the latest episode of Cyrus Says podcast and while having a chat with Cyrus, he revealed an interesting incident from the days when he was a freelance journalist and Shah Rukh was a TV actor.
Shah Rukh started his acting career in 1980s but he was seen in TV serials only till 1992. Mushtaq said that even though SRK was a big actor on TV, his interview was rejected by editor because SRK was not a movie star.
Here’s what Mushtaq revealed, “I remember the funniest story here is that when I take his story to my editor to print it in the magazine, it’s not considered cool enough because he is not a film star.”
Mushtaq Sheikh further said, “G magazine was all about film stars, and he was huge on television. Massive, but not in films. So at that time, obviously, as a freelancer, stories can be rejected, and you’re supposed to take it on your chin and move. I was like, ‘Okay, but I don’t know what to do, but the copy was excellent. He was brilliant’.”
Mushtaq added, “I want to give you a sure short guarantee that he was exactly as sparkling, brilliant, and witty as he is today. That first interview had quotes like, ‘I want to be number one; I am number one; I will be number one’.”
The screenwriter said that Shah Rukh’s confidence and humour was outstanding even at that time. In his words, “He knew what he was saying, and I thought there was a crackling sense of humour that he had in his humour and the way he spoke. And he had a way to look at the film industry that nobody else had because I think he gave a rat’s ass to anyone there that time.”
Later on, when Shah Rukh Khan became a big movie star, the G magazine wanted to interview him but King Khan told the magazine that he will only talk to Mushtaq.
