When Madhuri Dixit married Dr Shriram Nene, he was largely unfamiliar with the world of Bollywood. In fact, the renowned actress’ husband did not even recognise superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan at their wedding reception because he had grown up watching Hollywood films rather than Hindi cinema.

The couple recently appeared on Farah Khan’s vlog series, where the filmmaker asked Dr Nene why he had no idea about Madhuri Dixit’s superstar status when they first met. Explaining his background, Dr Nene said he had grown up watching films by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas and was a big fan of Star Wars. Since he rarely watched Hindi movies, he was unaware of Madhuri’s immense popularity. He revealed that he and Madhuri dated for three months after meeting and quickly developed a strong connection. They got along well and after three months of dating, he proposed to her.
Recalling their grand wedding reception in India, Dr Nene explained that he barely knew anyone among the guests. He compared the experience to being a prom king, where one keeps greeting people without knowing who they are and later looks through the wedding album to figure out who attended.
He added that Amitabh Bachchan was the only Bollywood personality he recognised because he had watched the actor’s film Amar Akbar Anthony. Dr Nene also confirmed that couldn’t recognise Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan at the reception.
In an earlier interview, Madhuri Dixit opened up about her life with Dr Nene in the United States and explained how different it was from her life as a Bollywood star in India. She recalled that living in Denver was more peaceful because there were fewer Indians in the area where she lived and most of her neighbours were Americans. For a long time, people did not know about her celebrity status and she was simply known as Mrs Nene.

During that period, Madhuri Dixit focused on family life with her sons, Arin and Ryan. She would regularly drop them off at school and enjoy a relatively normal routine away from the spotlight. However, one unusual incident forced Madhuri to explain her identity to her neighbours.
She recalled seeing a car arrive outside her house, drive around and return. Her neighbours became suspicious because they were concerned that someone might be planning a robbery. One of them even asked whether the police should be called. Madhuri quickly told them not to contact the police and explained that she was a celebrity. The people in the car were not there to rob the house, they were trying to catch a glimpse of her.
The incident highlighted how different her life was in the US, where many people were unaware of her fame, compared with India, where she was one of the biggest stars in the film industry. Madhuri also revealed that Dr Nene had not completely understood the extent of her popularity in India when they got married. Since he had little exposure to Hindi cinema, her celebrity status was initially unfamiliar to him.
The couple eventually returned to India in 2011. Over time, Dr Nene became more familiar with Bollywood and the film industry that had made his wife a household name.
Their story remains an interesting example of how two people from very different worlds can connect, even when one of them is a celebrated Bollywood superstar and the other knows very little about the glamour surrounding her.
