An unscripted moment on the sets of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam reportedly led to director Sanjay Leela Bhansali scolding Salman Khan in front of the crew. Actress Smita Jayakar, who played Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s mother in the 1999 film, has now recalled the incident and shared details about Salman and Aishwarya’s romance during the shoot.

Speaking in an interview recently, Smita revealed that the incident took place while the song Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyan was being filmed. Salman Khan was supposed to walk around a table while Aishwarya stood nearby. However, he touched her arm during the scene, even though the action was not part of the script.
According to Smita, Bhansali immediately questioned Salman Khan about why he had touched Aishwarya Rai when the scene did not require it. The director reportedly scolded the actor for going beyond the planned movements. Salman was supposed to stand at a particular spot and look at Aishwarya rather than touch her.

Smita explained that Salman Khan’s gesture appeared to come naturally from his feelings for Aishwarya. She suggested that the actor was in love with her and simply felt like touching her in that moment. However, Bhansali wanted the scene to be performed exactly as planned.
The actress also opened up about Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai’s relationship, which reportedly developed while they were working together on Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. She said their affection for each other was clearly visible on the sets and that they looked beautiful together. Smita particularly praised Aishwarya’s appearance at the time, describing her as divine and saying that the couple’s chemistry added a special magic to the film that audiences could also feel on screen.

Smita further recalled that the couple’s romance sometimes affected the shooting schedule, leaving the rest of the crew waiting for them to arrive. She said crew members would complain about having to report for a 7 am shift and then wait until 10 am without Salman and Aishwarya showing up. Despite these complaints, Smita felt that love could make people behave differently and believed there was little one could say about it.
Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai reportedly ended their relationship in 2002 and never worked together again after their breakup.

In a 2012 interview with Simi Garewal, Aishwarya spoke about her difficult breakup with Salman. She made it clear that she had largely put the experience behind her and did not wish to revisit it, especially on a public platform.
Aishwarya later married actor Abhishek Bachchan in April 2007. The couple welcomed their daughter Aaradhya Bachchan in 2011.
