Australia suffered a stunning nine-wicket defeat against Bangladesh in the first Test of the ongoing two-match series, creating a major upset in the cricketing world.
Playing at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin, Pat Cummins’ team struggled in all the three departments and ended up suffering their first ever Test defeat against Bangladesh on the home soil.
The match ended on Sunday during the second session of the fourth day, with Bangladesh completing a memorable victory. Despite the disappointing result, Australian captain Pat Cummins accepted the defeat and praised Bangladesh for their performance.
Speaking to former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist during the post-match presentation, Pat Cummins said Australia had prepared well for the opening Test and had no major complaints about their preparation. However, he admitted that Bangladesh completely outplayed Australia from the first day.
Pat Cummins pointed out that the pitch offered some assistance early on Day 1 but Australia needed to bat for much longer than they did. He also admitted that Australia failed to make enough impact with the ball. According to him, Bangladesh were patient, disciplined and consistently better across the different aspects of the game. Once Australia fell behind, they struggled to find a way back into the contest.
The Australian batters had a difficult time in both innings but Pat Cummins is not planning to make immediate changes to the team. He said the squad had only just finished the match and would take some time to analyse their performance, review the team combination and identify the areas that need improvement before the second Test.
Pat Cummins also warned Bangladesh that Australia have a strong record of responding after disappointing results. He expects the batters and other departments to review what went wrong and come back stronger in the next match.
While Australia had a disappointing overall performance, Josh Hazlewood and Cameron Green were among their standout performers in Darwin. Josh Hazlewood took seven wickets across the two innings, including six wickets in Bangladesh’s first innings. Cameron Green, meanwhile, scored an important 104 runs in the second innings of Australia.

Pat Cummins praised Josh Hazlewood for his contribution, highlighting his determination and class after a difficult period with injuries over the past couple of years. He also acknowledged Cameron Green’s important hundred, which was one of the few major positives for Australia in the Test.
With the second Test still to come, Australia now face the challenge of recovering from one of the most unexpected defeats of their recent home Test campaign, while Bangladesh will look to build on their historic victory.
Well played Bangladesh!
