However, the BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia made it clear that no such conversation has taken place. Speaking to a news channel, he emphasised that the rumours held no truth and that neither Viriat Kohli nor any other senior player had been contacted. His message was simple — there is no reason to give weight to unfounded talk.
The past year has already seen major shifts. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin have all stepped away from Test cricket and under Rahul Dravid’s coaching stint, long-time pillars Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane were gradually eased out.
With so many experienced players gone, India suddenly finds itself fielding one of its most inexperienced Test batting line-ups. The challenge has been especially tough on turning tracks, where mastering spin requires years of exposure. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli reportedly felt their roles were diminishing and both had endured quiet runs in home Tests before stepping aside. Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s most successful spinner after Anil Kumble, retired after being left out during the Australia tour in late 2024.
Even former England captain Kevin Pietersen weighed in on the chatter, urging that if there is even the slightest truth to the idea of Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma reconsidering, it should be taken seriously. He pointed out that Test cricket’s future remains a hot topic and if the biggest stars are open to returning, the sport should welcome it.
For now, though, the board insists nothing of the sort is happening.
