BJP MP Gopal Shetty Mocks Farmers Calling Committing Suicide A 'Fashion' Trend - RVCJ Media

Farmers are committing suicide throughout India on account of loss of crop in addition to several other agrarian causes but a statement from a Maharashtra BJP MP has shaken the whole country wherein he mocks such a somber problem and calls it fashion. This comment came when the state is already witnessing crisis on account of suicide of 124 farmers this year.

In the words of MP Gopal Shetty, “All farmer suicides are not only because of hunger and unemployment. There is a fashion, a trend is on. If Maharashtra government is giving Rs 5 lakh, another government is giving Rs 7 lakh, Rs 8 lakh. There is a competition going on to give money to farmers.”

Congress has condemned this remark by calling it “insensitive” and as per Sanjay Nirupam, MRCC president, “At a time when Maharashtra is undergoing its worst-ever agrarian crisis, Shetty’s remarks show how insensitive he and his party are towards thousands of farmers who have committed suicide due to debt and crop failure.”
