Finally Vijay Mallya, the famous business tycoon has been arrested in London. He had defaulted on loan worth 9,000 crores and now, after being arrested by Scotland Yard, Mallya will be produced in the Westminster Magistrates’ Court. India’s CBI and Enforcement Directorate had requested for his arrest.
Gopal Baglay, the External Affairs Ministry spokesperson said,
“The UK Home department on February 21 conveyed that the request of India for extradition of Mallya has been certified by the secretary of state and sent to the Westminster Magistrates’ Court for a district judge to consider the issue of releasing of warrant.”
Mallya has been facing several arrest warrants and money laundering charges and so, India has demanded his extradition.
Vijay Mallya left India last year and attempts by banks for recovering unpaid loans were in vain. Mallya had asked to return to India but in spite of his requests, he wasn’t allowed to travel as authorities had revoked his passport.
