Australia’s humiliating batting collapse against South Africa has sparked strong reactions from former cricketers, with ex-opener David Warner leading the criticism. Warner was furious with the team’s lack of fight after Australia suffered a 176-run defeat in the series-deciding third Test in Cape Town on Saturday.

Australia needed 288 runs to win the match and secure the series but their batting completely fell apart on the fifth morning. The visitors slipped to 62 for eight before eventually being bowled out, handing South Africa a memorable series victory.

David Warner, who was part of the Australian team less than three years ago, described the batting performance as unacceptable and said it did not reflect the fighting spirit traditionally associated with Australian cricket.

Speaking on a sports channel, David Warner expressed his disappointment with the team’s approach during such an important match. He felt that Australia had a genuine opportunity to win the Test and the series but failed to show the determination required.

The former opener also pointed out that the batters had repeatedly failed to support the bowling attack throughout the series. According to him, the bowlers had done their job but the batting unit had let the team down on several occasions.

David Warner also mentioned Matt Renshaw, who had shown some resistance by scoring a century in Durban. However, he felt that one player’s contribution could not hide the overall shortcomings of Australia’s batting lineup.

The former Australian opener was particularly disappointed because the team was chasing a manageable target of 288 runs with the series at stake. He believed that the players should have shown greater responsibility and fighting spirit instead of collapsing under pressure.

Australia captain Pat Cummins was also asked about David Warner’s strong criticism after the defeat. However, Cummins appeared taken aback by the comments and said that he was unsure how to respond to them.

Mark Waugh and Simon Katich Also Criticise Australia

David Warner was not the only former Australian cricketer unhappy with the team’s batting performance. Former Australia batter Mark Waugh also criticised the collapse, describing it as a terrible effort.

Meanwhile, Simon Katich suggested that Australia’s batting problems had been developing for quite some time and were not limited to the defeat against South Africa. Speaking on a radio channel, Simon Katich referred to several disappointing performances that had raised concerns about the team’s consistency. These included Australia’s two-day defeat at the MCG last year, their loss to Bangladesh in Darwin in August and their first-innings total of just 99 runs in Gqeberha.

Simon Katich felt that repeatedly making excuses for underperforming players would only encourage the same problems to continue. He warned that allowing poor performances to become acceptable would eventually lead to results like the latest collapse against South Africa.
