Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s international career has begun, but former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar believes the toughest phase is still ahead for the teenage batting sensation. While praising the youngster’s talent, Abhishek Nayar said dealing with rising expectations and pressure will be a much bigger challenge than making his debut.
The 15-year-old left-handed batter became India’s youngest ever international cricketer when he made his T20I debut against England in Manchester on Saturday. Although his innings lasted only 10 balls, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi gave fans a glimpse of his ability by smashing two sixes off Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue. However, he found it difficult to adjust to the extra bounce at Old Trafford and eventually lost his wicket to part-time off-spinner Will Jacks.
Speaking on a sports channel, Abhishek Nayar said the first match is usually the easiest but the challenge grows with every innings. He explained that while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s talent is unquestionable, his mental strength will be tested as expectations continue to rise. Abhishek Nayar also stressed that giving the youngster freedom to play his natural game and allowing him to grow without unnecessary pressure would be important for his success.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earned his India call-up after enjoying a sensational year. He was named the Player of the Tournament at both the Under-19 World Cup and the IPL 2026. The young batter played a match-winning knock of 175 in the Under-19 World Cup final before finishing as the highest run-scorer in the IPL 2026 with 776 runs at a strike rate of more than 237. He also impressed with an 11-ball half-century for India A against Sri Lanka A.
Despite his fearless batting style, Abhishek Nayar believes the pressure will only increase as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi spends more time in international cricket. He pointed out that outside expectations, personal goals and the attention that follows an India debut can make it difficult for a young player to express himself freely.

Abhishek Nayar added that India’s support staff will have a key role in helping the teenage star handle these pressures and settle into international cricket. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is expected to get an extended run in the format, with the third T20I against England scheduled to be played on Tuesday (July 7).
