As the Indian Premier League continues to evolve with tactical innovations like the Impact Player rule, former cricketers are debating how teams should use their biggest stars. One name at the center of that discussion is Rohit Sharma, the veteran opener of Mumbai Indians.

Former India cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra recently shared his thoughts on Rohit’s role in the team. According to him, it doesn’t make much sense for a fully fit player of Rohit Sharma’s stature to be used only as a batter through the Impact Player rule.

Aakash Chopra explained that when a player is physically fit and capable, it is more logical for him to participate in the entire match rather than coming in just to bat. He pointed out that this becomes even more unusual when the team is chasing, because an opening batter usually prepares by being actively involved in the game from the start instead of sitting in the dugout for most of the innings.

He also highlighted how opening batters generally like to stay engaged in the field before going out to bat. Being part of the match from the first ball helps them stay mentally ready and step onto the field with momentum. In Aakash Chopra’s view, Rohit Sharma is still one of the fittest and strongest players in the squad and Mumbai Indians would benefit more if he remained on the field throughout the entire 40 overs of a T20 match.

Another former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh echoed similar views. He believes Rohit Sharma’s value goes far beyond his batting. Having led Mumbai Indians successfully in the past, Rohit brings immense experience and leadership that can help the team during pressure moments.

Harbhajan Singh pointed out that in difficult situations during a match, the captain, currently Hardik Pandya, could benefit from Rohit Sharma’s guidance on the field. According to him, a senior player like Rohit can offer tactical advice and support when crucial decisions need to be made.

During the IPL 2025 season, Mumbai Indians frequently used Rohit Sharma as an Impact Player which sparked criticism from fans and analysts alike. The veteran opener also struggled with form that year, scoring only 240 runs across the season.

With a new IPL season approaching, Rohit Sharma will be eager to bounce back, prove his critics wrong and make a stronger impact for Mumbai Indians, both with the bat and on the field.
