Being the head coach of the Indian cricket team comes with enormous responsibilities, constant travel and very little time for personal life. Gautam Gambhir has now admitted that the demanding cricket schedule has sometimes left him mentally exhausted but he insists that he is strong enough to handle the pressure and responsibilities of the job.
Gautam Gambhir made these remarks after India’s defeat in the fifth and final T20I against New Zealand in Hamilton. The hosts chased down India’s target of 192 runs in just 18 overs to win the match. The series marked the 12th assignment Gambhir had been involved in as India’s head coach in 2026. While players often get breaks because they do not participate in every format or are rested by the BCCI’s medical team, Gambhir has had very little time away from cricket as the head coach across formats.
Even during the 2026 Asian Games, when VVS Laxman was in charge of India’s T20I team, Gautam Gambhir continued his coaching responsibilities with the ODI side during the home series against the West Indies. His busy schedule is set to continue, as India will next play a five-match ODI series followed by two Tests against New Zealand.

Gautam Gambhir Opens Up About Mental Exhaustion
Speaking after the final T20I against New Zealand, Gautam Gambhir admitted that the continuous cricket schedule had sometimes left him mentally drained. However, he made it clear that he does not believe in using fatigue or pressure as an excuse. He described himself as a professional who is prepared to accept the challenges that come with the job.
Gautam Gambhir also stressed that he has the mental strength to deal with the demands of international coaching, even when the workload becomes difficult. He maintained that he was ready to shoulder the pressure and take responsibility rather than step away from it.

The demanding nature of the position also explains why the BCCI reportedly finds it difficult to persuade coaches to take up the job. Despite the attractive salary, the extensive travelling and long periods away from family make the role challenging.
Gautam Gambhir Praises Indian Team for Winning Despite Limited Preparation
Apart from discussing his own workload, Gautam Gambhir also praised the Indian players for their performance during the T20I series in New Zealand. He pointed out that the team had very little time to prepare after travelling from India. The players arrived in New Zealand on the 20th and had their first practice session on the 21st, leaving them with just one day of preparation before the opening match in Christchurch.
Gautam Gambhir highlighted the difficulties involved in adjusting to different playing conditions, weather and ground dimensions after a 15-hour flight. He also reminded everyone that India were playing against a quality New Zealand side on their home ground. The hosts had considerable experience in T20 cricket, while many Indian players were touring New Zealand for the first time.
Despite these challenges, India managed to win the first three matches and take an unassailable lead in the five-match series. Gautam Gambhir felt that the team’s achievement deserved special recognition because of the limited preparation time and difficult travelling conditions. He believed that the players deserved significant credit for producing such a strong performance after just one practice session. Although India eventually lost the final two matches, Gambhir wanted the effort behind their initial three victories to be recognised.
The Indian team will now shift its attention to the upcoming ODI and Test assignments against New Zealand, while Gautam Gambhir continues to manage the demanding responsibilities of coaching the national side across formats.
